‘Uthmaan Ibn al-‘Aas (radhi-yAllaahu ‘anhu) narrated: I said ‘O Messenger of Allah, verily the devil comes between me and my prayer and recitation making me confused’ The Messenger of Allah (sal-Allaahu ‘alayhe wa sallam) replied ‘That is a devil called Khanzab, so if you sense his presence then seek refuge in Allah from him and spit on your left side three times (comprising mostly air with little spittle)’ (Muslim 4/1729)
Who Is Khanzab?
The Prophet ﷺ mentioned a specific devil named Khanzab who interferes with a person’s prayer.
Khanzab’s role is to:
Create doubts during salah
Confuse the recitation
Make you forget rak‘ahs
Distract the heart and mind
When you ask Allah for refuge by reciting أَعُوذُ بِاللهِ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيمِ, you are placing yourself under the care of the Best Protector. Khanzab has no power over a servant who turns sincerely to Allah.
Why Do Whisperings (Waswas) Happen During Prayer?
Many Muslims experience distractions during salah. Random thoughts appear, focus breaks, and suddenly you are unsure what you were reciting or which rak‘ah you are in. This is a common experience and not a sign of weak faith.
These whisperings are known as waswas, and they happen because Shaytan tries to pull your attention away from your ibadat. His goal is not only distraction, but also confusion and frustration so that prayer no longer feels peaceful.
Remember: These whisperings or thoughts not make your prayer invalid. Allah is raheem, he knows everything.
Can This Be Done During Salah?
Yes.
This dua and action are allowed during prayer and were taught by the Prophet ﷺ himself.
Just seek refuge in Allah and continue your Salah calmly.
What If the Whisperings Keep Coming Back?
If the thoughts return:
Repeat the dua calmly
Do not argue with the thoughts
Do not panic or rush the prayer
Shaytan becomes weaker when you stay calm and consistent. Over time, these whisperings reduce. Make this dua, seek Allah’s protection, and continue your ibadat with trust and calmness.
