Surah Taubah is a Madni Surah. Taubah means repentance. This Surah is also called Al-Bar’ah. The name of this Surah shows that it is related to ALLAH’s forgiveness. This surah has many name i-e Surah At- Tawbah, Surah Tauba.
|No. of Verses||129|
|No. of Rukus||16|
|No. of Para (Chapter)||10|
If you have committed sins, you are ashamed of them as well and you realize about the sins you committed, you seek forgiveness from ALLAH almighty.
You also promise yourself that you won’t repeat the same sins again, that means it is a sincere repentance. If any of these three points is missing, that means your repentance is not sincere at all.
When this Surah was revealed; at that time Makkah was under the control of enemies of Islam. Kaabah was full of idols and non-Muslims used to do naked Tawaf.
Our beloved Prophet (S.A.W) wanted to do Tawaf; but not the way non-believers used to do.
At that time Muslims had a treaty with Mushrikeen, named “Hudaybiyyah”. That treaty was signed by the Muslims three years ago. Treaty of Hudabiyyah had to last for 10 years.
Mushrikeen attacked at Khuza’a which ended the peace treaty. That time Surah Taubah was revealed and there was a clear message of jihad in it. Hazrat Muhammad (P.B.U.H) sent Hazrat Abu Bakr (R.A) for Hajj and asked to lead those Muslims who were supposed to perform Hajj.
That time our beloved Prophet (P.B.U.H) sent Hazrat Ali Abu Talib (A.S) towards the enemies of Islam to announce the end of peace treaty. Hazrat Ali (A.S) was also given few starting verses of Surah Taubah to recite it publicly in front of the non-believers of Islam and announce that the peace treaty between believers and non-believers of Islam had been ended.
Another message to Mushrikeen was, that the Muslims are peaceful, but peace should not be taken as weakness of Muslims. They were able to take any strict action against the Mushrikeen.
Importance of repentance:
You can see the importance of repentance through these Quranic verses:
But those committed evil deeds and then repented and believed, verily, your Lord after (all) that is indeed oft-forgiving, most merciful. (Surah l-Araf: verse 153)
ALLAH accepts only the repentance of those who do evil in ignorance and foolishness and repent soon afterwards; it is they whom ALLAH will forgive and ALLAH is ever All-knower, All-wise. ( Surh n-Nise, Verse 17)
The prophet (P.B.U.H) said in a Hadith:
“Every son of Adam sins, and the best of those who sin are those who repent.”
(Al-Tirmidhi, 2499; classed as Hasan by al-Albaani.
Individuality of Surah At-Tauba:
It’s the only Surah of Quran which does not begin with Bismillah. Now the question arises that why there is no Bismilla at the start of this Surah?
When you recite Bismillah, it means you are seeking help and blessing of ALLAH at the beginning of any act. It is the sign of peace and mercy of Almighty as well.
This Surah was revealed in the background of a war. It’s a Surah which gives the message of Jihad. That is why Bismillah is not recited at the beginning.
Bukhari Shareef (Vol 2,Pg 271):
“This Surah was revealed to cancel the peace treaty. In it appears the command of killing the mushrikeen (polytheists) and the expression of Allah Ta`ala’s anger over them. Therefore, Bismillah was not written at the beginning of the Surah since Bismillah signifies peace and mercy”.
Bukhri Shareef (Vol2,pg 271):
“It was revealed to the prophet (P.B.U.H) to cancel the peace treaty with non-believers of ALLAH”.
Duration of revealing the Surah:
It was revealed when there was the time of the Battle of Tabuk.
It was not revealed completely at once; it was revealed in different parts. Some of its parts were revealed at the start of the war; some during the war and some parts at the end of this war.
According to Sahi Muslim, Surah Taubah is the last chapter, which was revealed from ALLAH.
