Dua Seeking Forgiveness
أَسْتَغْفِرُ اللهَ الَّذِي لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا هُوَ الْحَيُّ الْقَيُّومُ وَأَتُوبُ إِلَيْهِ
Transliteration

Astaghfirullaa-hal-ladhee laa ilaha illaa huwal-ḥayyul-qayyoomu wa atoobu ilayh

Dua for Sleeping
اَللّهُمَّ بِسْمِكَ أَمُوْتُ وَ أَحْيَ
Transliteration

Allahumma Bismika amootu wa-ahya

Translation

 Oh Allah, I live and die calling your name.

Hudhaifah and Abu Dharr (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:

The Messenger of Allah (Prophet Muhammad) used to supplicate when he went to bed at night: “Bismik-Allahumma ahya wa amut (With Your Name, O Allah, I expire and return to life).” [Al- Bukhari].

Dua before Sleeping
“سُبْحَانَ اللهِ، والْحَمْدُ للهِ، وَاللهُ أَكْبَرُ”
Transliteration

Subhaanallaahi, – Walhamdu lillaahi, -Wallaahu ‘Akbar

Translation

Glory is to Allah (thirty-three times in Arabic) , praise is to Allah (thirty-three times) , Allah is the Most Great (thirty-four times)

Hazrat Ali (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:

The Messenger of Allah said to me and to Fatimah (May Allah be pleased with her) (Ali’s wife and the Prophet’s daughter), “When you go to bed, recite: Takbir (Allahu Akbar) thirty-three times and Tasbih (Subhan-Allah) thirty-three times and Tahmid (Al-hamdu lillah) thirty-three times.” [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

Whoever says (the above) a hundred times during the day, his sins are wiped away, even if they are like the foam of the sea. [Bukhari and Muslim]

Abu Dharr reported that the Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Shall I tell you the words that Allah loves the most?” I said: “Yes, tell me, O Messenger of Allah.” He said: “The words dearest to Allah are: subhanAllah wa bihamdihi. [Muslim and Tirmidhi]

A palm tree is planted for the reciter [of the above] in Paradise. [Tirmidhi and al-Hakim]

Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said: “Two words are light on the tongue, weigh heavily in the balance, they are loved by the Most Merciful One.” [Bukhari and Muslim]

Supplication for Sleeping
لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ الْوَاحِدُ اْقَهَّارُ، رَبُّ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا الْعَزِيزُ الْغَفَّارُ
Transliteration

Laa ‘ilaaha ‘illallaahul-Waahidul-Qahhaaru, Rabbus-samaawaati wal’ardhi wa maa baynahumal-‘Azeezul-Ghaffaaru.

Translation

There is none worthy of worship but Allah, the One, the Victorious, Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, the All-Mighty, the All-Forgiving.

Importance of Dua:

Dua is not an obligatory prayer for the Muslims in Islam. But there are many significance of making Dua to Allah Almighty.

Through Dua, one can feel closer to the Almighty Allah. As it is the way in which believers directly communicate with his Creator.

Islam emphasizes on making prayers before sleep. As for peaceful sleep, Isha prayer are very important. Similarly, there are many Dua;s which are highly significant for the Muslims.

  • Recite Bismillah daily before sleeping.
  • Recite Ayat ul kursi daily before sleep. According to the Holy Prophet (S.A.W), whoever prays this dua before going to sleep Allah Almighty protects him throughout the night.

Prophet (ﷺ) said, “By reciting it (Ayat- ul-Kursi), there will be a guardian appointed over you from Allah who will protect you during the night, and Satan will not be able to come near you until morning” [Al-Bukhari]

  • If you want to safeguard from the punishment of the grave, recite Surah ul Mulk (Chapter 67 – The Sovereignty) daily before sleep. The Holy Prophet (S.A.W) also made this dua before sleep. So, it is the Sunnah of the Holy Prophet (S.A.W).

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Surah al Mulk is the protector from the torment of the grave” [Sahihul Jamiea 1/680, Hakim 2/498 & Nasai]

Jabir (radiAllahu anhu) said it was the custom of the Holy Prophet (ﷺ) not to go to sleep until he had read Tabarakalladhi Biyadihil Mulk and Alif Laam Meem Tanzeel. [Ahmad, Tirmidhi and Darami]

Anas (radiAllahu anhu) reported Rasulullah (ﷺ) as saying, “There is a Surah which will plead for its reciter till it causes him to enter paradise” (Tabarakalladhi Biyadihil Mulk). [Tabrani]

  • To sleep in a state of Wudhu [Tabarani, Hakim, Abu Dawood]

It is important for every Muslim to communicate with the Allah Almighty. Dua is the easiest way through which you communicate with Allah.

    I just saw a small error in the transliteration of ‘Bismikallahumma amoothu wa ahya’. In transliteration, it is written ‘Bismikallahumma ahya wa amooth’ please correct it.
